Here’s a last look at some other news from this week before some of you head into the long weekend:

Down in the southeast, Allied Fiber revealed a key partner who will help anchor the Atlanta end of their intercity fiber buildout. They’re building fiber into Colo Atl’s carrier neutral location at 55 Marietta Street, giving them direct access to both the SNAP internet exchange and the Georgia Technology center. Allied Fiber will be finishing up its Miami-Atlanta route over the next few months, after which they will likely turn their attention northward.

Lightower continued to fill out its presence in the MidAtlantic this week by gaining a master contract with the state of Maryland. The award will let them sell their suite of network services to agencies, counties, municipalities, around the state. Lightower first moved into the Maryland market with the Sidera acquisition, and in May of last year announced a significant metro fiber buildout in greater Baltimore.

ViaWest unveiled expansion plans up in the Pacific northwest this week. They’re building a third data center in the Portland, Oregon metro area. When complete in the third quarter of this year, the new facility will add some 138,000 square feet to ViaWest’s footprint. They just opened a new data center back in Colorado last summer as well, but this is their first new project since being acquired by Canada’s Shaw Communications.

And on the international front, Sweden’s Transcom is expanding in the Spanish-speaking world with the help of Orange Business Services. Orange will be providing IP VPN connectivity to Transcom’s contact centers in both Colombia and Spain. The former is part of an move by Transcom into Latin America.
