Zayo’s Latest Big Expansion: Northern California

April 2nd, 2014 by · 3 Comments

Zayo is at it again. No, they didn’t buy anyone yet today, I mean on the organic front. For all the fanfare of M&A and consolidation, Zayo’s more enduring legacy will be all the fiber they are putting in the ground. The new project is in and around the heart of the tech world: Silicon Valley.

TRImage_106 Apr. 02They are planning to build out an additional 550 route miles of dark fiber in the San Francisco Bay Area, or more specifically downtown San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley, Palo Alto, San Jose, Walnut Creek, and Fairfield.  Basically, everything in purple on the map to the left.

Zayo’s northern California footprint started out with what came with the 360Networks deal, but added a lot of depth with the purchase of AboveNet.  When complete, the expansion will give them more than 1,500 route miles across the sprawling metro area and presumably a boost to their current on-net building count of 443.

Hmmm…  Zayo’s about due for another fiber purchase though.  Maybe one of those European opportunities will finally materialize this spring.
