For 2013, the Level 3 Communications (NYSE:LVLT, news, filings) story will come down to growth, and more specifically what rate of enterprise growth they can build up to. So the two enterprise contracts they've announced this week will hopefully be the start of a steady stream of similar deals.
Today's announcement was one they got through the Amazon AWS Direct Connect partnership. Courtagen Life Sciences will be using their Ethernet Private Line services to send terabytes of compressed data to their ZiPhyr cloud platform for processing. It's medical data, DNA information actually, and hence HIPAA requirements are in force and Level 3's dedicated connectivity is replacing actual physical shipments they relied on in the past.
And yesterday it was the communications agency Waggener Edstrom Worldwide using both Level 3's Smart WAN and their voice and collaboration services to power their communications needs across three continents. Specifically mentioned was the network integrity feature, which gives Waggener greater visibility into network performance. This is the sort of deal Global Crossing specialized in, and Level 3's enterprise push depends on further such successes.
