The independent IP backbone Hurricane Electric is further expanding its European network toward the south and east. Last week they added two more PoPs in Milano and Vienna.
The Milan PoP is at the MIX internet exchange point, the located in the Via Caldera campus – i.e. where everyone’s first Italian presence seems to get started. The Vienna PoP is at Interxion’s Louis-Haefliger-Gasse 10 facility. Interxion completed phase 1 of its Vienna facility just over a year ago.
HE has been in expansion mode lately, both in IP and in space. They’ve been one of the most strident proponents of IPv6 for many years now. They’re also adding another 24,000 square feet to their colo space in their home market of Fremont CA with some backing from Bank of the West.
Their aggressive stance lately is interesting relative to the more difficult years some of the larger independent backbones have had, such as Inteliquent and Cogent. Perhaps HE might be ready to emerge as a consolidating force in their own right.
