A Unified Zayo/360Networks Fiber Map

October 19th, 2011 by · 5 Comments

The folks at Zayo and 360Networks have put together a fiber map reflecting the combined assets of the two companies when they close their deal in a few months.  Of course, longtime readers know that maps are my weakness!  There are two ways to look at this map though.  The fit is very complementary, and will make Zayo a truly transcontinental provider for the first time with most of its metro assets connected together.  On the other hand, it also makes clear what pieces are still missing from the puzzle.  Here's the map (click to enlarge, or download the PDF if you prefer):

Hmmm, New England, New York State, and the Southeast and then the puzzle is complete, eh?  Maybe Southern Telecom and Lightower?  And perhaps some dark fiber from phase 2 of Allied Fiber's buildout, hmmm...

Do you think the 360 purchase provides the assets that would take Zayo out of the XO sweepstakes or be complimentary and they possibly could make a move for XO.

No reason I see to buy XO, the Zayo/ 360 Network will speak for itself. The XO customer exodus will inevitable happen and Zayo will be there to pick up the pieces without the anchor that XO would put on the company.

    The real question is…
Will Allied Fiber ever build any phases of their network??

Quite an impressive map. It illustrates the importance of connecting metro networks, and raises the question of whether stand-alone metro fiber providers are now at a competitive disadvantage.
