A Marketplace For Equinix

October 24th, 2011 by · 1 Comment

Today Equinix (NASDAQ:EQIX, news, filingsintroduced a new Marketplace service designed to help its thousands of customers do business amongst themselves. That means not just interconnection, but any of the many data and infrastructure services eachcustomer may specialize in.

In a way, all this is just a nice wrapping around an existing phenomenon. Much of the critical mass Equinix has comes from the network effect – people want to be in their facilities because they can reach so many networks and providers in the same building. Equinix is simply formalizing it via custom profiles and virtual storefronts.

But on the other hand, with the rise of the cloud we are seeing even more complex interconnectivity between different providers develop. No other colocation provider has quite as large an ecosystem built in (4000 buyers and sellers according to the PR), but such online marketplaces will no doubt spring up elsewhere as well.  That is, assuming using their portal is more convenient than the existing informal relationships that already exist.
