HyperOne Kicks Off Construction

Australia’s newest longhaul fiber network project is officially getting underway. HyperOne announced today that it has begun construction of its 20,000km hyperscale digital backbone.

Phase 1a of the project is a 2300km diverse fiber loop hooking up the core markets of Sydney, Canberra, and Melbourne. The company expects to have this part complete 12 months or so from now, offering massive bandwidth through Australia’s “Cloud Alley”.  Of course, that’s the easier part of the project, taking on the largest and most lucrative markets, and therefore the obvious place to start.

AFL Global has been tasked with the manufacture of the cable itself, the initial order covering 7600km of cable, or a bit more than a third of the proposed total. It will be 100% ducted and fully armored, with sheaths designed to protect against termites, rodents, and other dangers in the soil and rock through the Australian outback.

HyperOne is the latest thing to come from billionaire andserial infrastructure entrepreneur Bevan Slattery.
