CenturyLink Takes Its Metro Fiber into Charleston

February 26th, 2020 by · Leave a Comment

CenturyLink is already in most metros it wants to be in, so we don’t get to hear about too many discrete expansion projects. But this week they have announced plans to expand their metro network and enterprise reach down into the South Carolina port of Charleston.

Charleston’s tech scene has been growing rapidly, and has earned the once sleepy infrastructure market the moniker ‘Silicon Harbor’ in recent years. That’s just a name of course, and these days it seems like everyone would like to have a nickname that includes ‘silicon’ somehow.  But the city has indeed been successful in attracting investment and talent to its downtown and the city now boasts 250+ software, security, and other tech firms.

When complete this summer, CenturyLink’s network expansion will bring its fiber closer to the businesses taking advantage of Charleston’s rise, both downtown and further inland into North Charleston as well.  Beyond that, not many details are available on the buildout, but the results won’t be too hard to discern once it’s in place.
