Thursday Bytes: FirstLight, QTS, EdgeConneX, Spectrum

I’m still on the road down in Orlando at MEF17, but in the meantime here’s a few quick takes on a few news items from the first half of the week:

FirstLight Fiber is bringing its bandwidth to bear at an adaptive redevelopment project up in Biddeford, Maine. The Pepperell Mill Campus has tapped the regional fiber operator for a 1Gbps pipe hooking up its 16-building, 16-acre presence. That bandwidth will help serve the 130 businesses and 100 residential unit while allowing Pepperell Mill to offer a 10-30% lower price than is available elsewhere nearby. On the other hand, if things go well I suspect they’ll need more than 1Gbps.

QTS has done a deal with Amazon to bring its colocation services to the latter’s cloud customers. They are providing a pre-built colocation solution called QTS CloudRamp on the AWS Marketplace. The idea is to target those needing short-term colo for cloud migration or for long term hybrid setups. The product is available at QTS’s Piscataway, Richmond, and Santa Clara facilities.

EdgeConneX has been busy furthering its foothold over in Europe. They have become a member of the Dutch Data Center Association. EdgeConneX has been in the Netherlands almost two years now since launching its first location in Amsterdam, and now have four facilities there. EdgeConneX has been bringing its message of colo at the edge to the European marketplace, and is looking at 10 expansion markets other than Amsterdam and London.

And Spectrum Enterprise is wading deeper into the SD-WAN pool. Here at MEF 2017 they have demonstrated a new approach to hybrid SD-WAN solutions and announced customer trials as well. It’s an overlay solution that can ‘stich together’ both native Ethernet WANs and internet-based SD-WAN connections, making for an easier transition from legacy network services.
