Int’l Roundup 7/16: NTT America, Tata, NBN, Digital Realty

Here’s a quick roundup of today’s other news from the international front via NTT, Tata, NBN, and Digital Realty:

NTT America has expanded its managed services offering to any network with the launch of its IntelOps service. The idea is to automate remote monitoring across its customers’ entire networks, not just the managed private network from NTT itself but also third party networks and devices. NTT has been working hard for several years now to position itself for the corporate IT market in the cloud era, and they do seem to be ready to rumble.

Tata Communications made another move in Africa today, a place they have been increasingly making their presence felt. They have extended their Video Connect network into Nigeria via the Main One cable, offering Nigerian content providers to distribute live video worldwide. While Reliance is trying to squeeze cash out of its submarine cable assets out in Singapore, Tata is investing in greater reach and future growth around the globe.

Down under, the Australian national broadband network revealed a big piece of how it’s going to reach the 3% of the population in the most remote parts of the country. They’ve signed an AU$280M contract with US-based ViaSat for satellite infrastructure, specifically two 13.5 metre-wide antennas for each of the NBN’s 10 ground stations, plus some 200K smaller dishes for households and businesses. An earlier announcement put the two Ka-band satellites themselves in the hands of Loral, to be launched in 2015

And Digital Realty finished off two deals today. They completed the acquisition of the Sentrum Portfolio in London, adding 761,000 square feet across three data centers for about $1.1B. And their joint venture with Savvis closed the purchase of a 164,000 square foot facility in Hong Kong. It’s Digital Realty’s first foothold in Hong Kong, but you have to figure it won’t be the last.
