Five interesting items to catch up with:

Akamai has made an interesting inorganic move as it positions itself for an AI-driven infrastructure world. They have announced the acquisition of Fermyon, which has a cloud-native function-as-a-service product called WebAssembly. Akamai plans to combine this with is global distributed infrastructure to enable the building of edge-native AI applications.

EllaLink is expanding its footprint on the Brazilian side of its transatlantic cable system. They are adding new space and power at Telxius’ Fortaleza data center in northern Brazil. EllaLink’s cable connects Brazil with Portugal, with extensions to Madeira, Morocco, and Cabo Verde in place and addition projects to hook up French Guiana and Mauritania under construction.

MDC Data Centers has a key new tenant from south of the border at its facility in McAllen TX. The Mexican provider Axtel has chosen MDC’s MCA2 data center as its strategic hub there, leaving their previous presence in the Chase building. Axtel operates 50,000km of fiber network across Mexico, and McAllen is a key point of interconnection to US network infrastructure.

XKL has won a convert to its DWDM technology. The Japanese internet exchange provider JPIX has selected XKL’s hardware to upgrade its 400G IX network infrastructure. The project will help JPIX meet demand from global AI hyperscalers and is expected to be able to support 800G and 1.6T when needed.

And DE-CIX and Epsilon Telecommunications have deepened their relationship. Epsilon is now a premium reseller for DE-CIX’s global footprint as the two look to target connectivity demand in the Asia-Pacific region. Epsilon, which became part of KT a few years ago, has extensive reach within the region, while DE-CIX now has some 16 IXs in place from Japan around to India.
