Four interesting Items of regional interest plus one subsea:

Verizon has made an inorganic move deeper into the fixed wireless space. The industry giant has announced an agreement to acquire Starry, which specializes in fixed wireless connectivity to MDUs in urban areas. Starry serves 100K such customers in Boston, Denver, New York, Los Angeles, and Washington DC. Verizon has a target of 8-9M fixed wireless subscribers by 2028, complementing its Fios reach.

Ripple Fiber is making waves out in the Chicago metro area. The last mile provider says it has completed construction of its first sector of households in Elk Grove Village, and will be kicking off construction in DuPage County early next year. They’ll be taking aim at Naperville, Streamwood, Joliet, and Aurora.

Great Plains Communications has tapped Ciena to help upgrade the eastern portion of its Midwest network footprint. They’ll be leveraging Ciena’s coherent routing technology on its carrier backbone and transport networks in Illinois and Indiana. GPC has eyes on new customers in Springfield, Champaign, Chicago, South Bend, Terre Haute and Indianapolis.

NTT Data has picked up a significant government sector award down in Texas. The Texas Department of Information Resources has selected NTT Data for public cloud managed services in a multi-year deal. NTT Data will serve as the Public Cloud Manager, enabling streamlined usage of AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, and Oracle.

And MOX is making a move on some major transpacific capacity. They have secured two full fiber pairs on the Topaz subsea cable system, which connects Vancouver directly with Japan. Topaz went live in 2023 with 16 fiber pairs, and MOX had already been a spectrum customer since January of this year. That must have gone quite well for them to upgrade to two full fiber pairs already.
