Int’l Bytes: euNetworks, Telxius, Telstra, Vodafone, Fujitsu, Nokia

Four bits of news from four corners of the networking space from around the world:

euNetworks has opened up a new longhaul fiber route to southern Europe. The new route connects the FLAP-D hub of Frankfurt to Milan and Marseille via Zurich, taking the eastern route across the Alps rather than the more common route through Lyon and Geneva. That will enable both diversity and lower latency from the subsea landing stations up to destinations in Germany.  It also complements all the FLAP-D investments euNetworks has been making.

Telxius is adding more landing services to its portfolio in order to better support all the new subsea cable deployments out there. The new capabilities involve the planning, maintenance and operation of cable landing stations, of which the company runs some 26 around the world.

Telstra is teaming up with Silicon Quantum Computing to leverage a bit of quantum computing for network operations. The two have announced results of a joint initiative to use quantum machine learning for predictive analytics, looking for changes in network patterns and enabling proactive responses. SQC’s machine learning system, Watermelon, is a quantum reservoir with features that an AI model can use. Training and fine tuning took days rather than the usual weeks to achieve the performance of Telstra’s current model.

And Vodafone tapped two vendors for its radio networks. They have selected 1Finity’s Open RAN technology for a deployment across Europe. 1Finity is part of Fujitsu. And Vodafone has also extended a strategic partnership with Nokia across both Europe and Africa. They’ll be providing massive MIMO radios, baseband, and remote radio head solutions as well as their AI powered network management technology.
