There was a bit of interesting infrastructure M&A over in southeastern Europe in a market we don’t hear a lot from. EXA Infrastructure said yesterday that it has signed an agreement to acquire all the long-haul duct assets of Conexio doo Beograd.
Connexio’s infrastructure follows the roadways in Serbia, connecting Hungary and Croatia in the northwest to North Macedonia and Bulgaria in the southeast. Along the way it reaches into the Serbian cities of Belgrade, Niš, and Novi Sad. The backbone was built back in 2011 and features 860km of 2 HDPE pipes containing G.655E fiber and 15 ILE sites. The deal also comes with existing customer contracts.
EXA will use the infrastructure alongside its other acquisitions in the region – Unitel in Croatia and GCN in Bulgaria – to assemble a homogeneous network from western Europe through the Balkans to Turkey. EXA has long seen opportunity for infrastructure investments in the region, including its work on the Trans Adriatic Express a couple years ago.
