Zayo Kicks Off Columbus-Pittsburgh Longhaul Buildout

December 5th, 2019 by · Leave a Comment

Zayo has been pretty quiet lately as we all wait for the deal by Digital Colony and EQT to close and take them private. But this week they announced a new project on the organic front: another longhaul buildout.

Zayo plans to build some new fiber out in the Midwest, developing an alternative between the markets of Pittsburgh and Columbus. Most routes through this area tend to be on the standard NYC-Chicago routes, and thus pass further to the north through the Cleveland metro area along I-80 and I-90.  This 200 mile route will instead pass through Wheeling WV and Washington PA, presumably along I-70. From Columbus and Pittsburgh the new fiber will connect up with the rest of Zayo’s global infrastructure.

Zayo says this is success-based, which likely means that at least one of the big hyperscalers is onboard for a substantial pile of fiber aimed at greater diversity in their network.  I’m pretty sure Zayo already has some assets on this route, just not new ones and maybe not at the depth needed either.  Zayo has been piecing together individual longhaul builds around the country for a number of years now, leveraging specific demand from the market to add new infrastructure to its portfolio for the long term.

Construction will begin this quarter and they hope to have it completed next year.
