Liquid Telecom Crosses Africa

November 13th, 2019 by · Leave a Comment

Packets looking to cross Africa from east to west now have a new option other than going the long way around via subsea cables. Liquid Telecom has unveiled a new terrestrial route crossing the continent through some of the most difficult and politically dicey terrain on the planet.

The new 2,600km route takes advantage of a long stretch through the Democratic Republic of Congo, starting on the coast at Muanda, passing the capital Kinshasha, and following the southern border down through Lubumbashi where it crosses into Zambia and meets up with Liquid’s other fiber in Lusaka. From there it turns back northeast to Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania and Mombasa, Kenya.

Liquid Telecom’s pan-African network is steadily becoming more, well, pan-African. Most of their early efforts focused on connecting the markets of eastern Africa with those of southern Africa, culminating in the ability to connect Cairo and Cape Town via direct fiber connection.

That focus was natural given the current level of infrastructure development in those areas relative to the western coast.  This expansion through the DRC could get them over that hump, although there is plenty of work left to do to reach other spots on a very long western coast.
