Metro Bytes: WANRack, TIM, Open Fiber, Zayo

February 6th, 2019 by · Leave a Comment

Here’s a quick rundown on some metro fiber news worth noting:

WANRack’s Arizona footprint is growing again around Phoenix. The E-Rate specialist has completed a buildout for the Agua Fria School District, adding 19 route miles in the cities of Goodyear, Avondale, and Buckeye. Meanwhile, they have also broken ground on networks for Saddle Mountain (12 route miles) and Littleton Elementary (8 route miles) school districts. Combined with existing footprint, the company’s Phoenix metro network stretches 100 route miles.

Over in Italy, one of the less secret M&A negotiations is underway. According to Capacity, TIM has confirmed that its CEO Luigi Gubitosi met yesterday with Open Fiber CEO Elisabetta Ripa to talk about a merger. Prior to taking the helm at Open Fiber Ripa previously led TIM’s internationa division, Sparkle, while Gubitosi took over as CEO at TIM just 3 months ago after leaving Alitalia. TIM, the Italian government, and the company’s big shareholders have been engaged in a struggle over a network separation plan.

And late last week Zayo picked up an ultra low latency deal. An unnamed high frequency trading firm is using the company’s dark fiber and wavelengths in the NY/NJ financial corridor. The deal leverages fiber acquired in the Spread Networks deal, which built out its network specifically for such applications. The markets are closely watching Zayo’s fortunes right now in the context of a potential M&A transaction, as private equity firms have been linked to a potential bid to take the company private again.
