Ciena reported its fiscal fourth quarter earnings this morning, offering its usual extra month of insight into the state of the market.
Revenues of $716.2M were in the right range, and were up 3.5% over the same period last year. The company saw steady improvement in its packet and converged packet-optical equipment revenues, a nice surge in software and related sales, and steady growth in its global services. The only line that saw declines was the one that should have, the legacy optical transport business. Looking ahead, Ciena expects its fiscal first quarter of 2017 to check in with revenues of $615-645, which straddles the analyst consensus view, albeit with a slightly conservative tint.
Meanwhile on the bottom line, non-GAAP earnings per share of $0.44 were perhaps a couple of pennies light relative to analyst projections. But for the vendor space, that’s still in the right range and is still up a couple of pennies from the same period last year. Overall, it looks like a pretty steady quarter to me, although the market will of course have its own say.
