In the last several days there has been a series of announcements surrounding protection against DDoS attacks. What strikes me is the wide range of companies involved in the handling of this sort of threat.
PenTeleData has selected a solution from Radware and Kentik to help protect its customers from DDoS attacks. Radware will be providing on-premises attack mitigation solutions for the operator’s fiber entwork, while Kentik’s cloud-based analytics will help keep track of things and trigger mitigations. The new solution replaces a legacy one that was not succeeding with sufficient frequency against the latest types of attacks.
F5 Networks has joined the Equinix Cloud Exchange, a move that will let them provide direct access to their managed DDoS protection service via Equinix facilities in Frankfurt, Singapore, Silicon Valley and Washington, DC. In particular, customers with multi-cloud needs that use the exchange will be able to better protect themselves.
And Limelight Networks has been selected by Neustar to power the latter’s DDoS mitigation network. Neustar will be leveraging Limelight’s global CDN reach and scale in combination with its own real-time analysis and security solutions. DDoS attacks have always seemed a bit of a clumsy weapon to me, I’ve been surprised that they have continued to be such a successful tool over the years, and in fact have only gained in momentum. Perhaps with the next generation of security capabilities the good guys will get a bit more of the upper hand.

Hi Rob, Avi Freedman wrote a nice article elsewhere called “The Great Network Forgery” that outlines some root causes for why DDoS is so persistent and growing fast in the Internet. Seems to me that DDoS has historically been perceived by major telco’s as more of a service revenue opportunity, to offer DDoS protection services to enterprises, rather than as a big threat. However, with 1Tbps+ attacks starting to become more viable, large carriers may start to feel more heat on their own infrastructure. Also, DDoS is incresingly used as a cover for more intrusive exploits. Anyway, worthy of further discussion.
