South America has a new optical infrastructure player. A group of investors has launched Conecta Infra, a neutral infrastructure platform targeting high capacity intercity networks acrossthe continent. They are starting out with $350M that will go toward 6,000km of infrastructure.
Historically, a lot of the continent’s major markets have depended on subsea links rather than attempting cross-border links through the interior. Conect Infra, however, is looking to connect Chile and Argentina to the major hubs of Brazil via owned, underground fiber networks. They also will be expanding to Porto Alegre, Curitiba, Brasilia, Reio de Janeiro, and Fortaleza.
The company will be offering dark fiber pairs and conduit, and will not be operating optical equipment or data networks of its own. Rather they will be looking to enable telecom operators, content providers, and of course the hyperscalers. The buildout plans are a response to the rise of cloud and AI on the continent, which are driving greater connectivity between data centers and major urban centers. Lower latency and greater scalability are increasing in importance.
Conect Infra will be led by Rafael Pires, who founded RW Telecom in 2019, and its investor group is led by the Brazilian private equity group MissionCo.
