A few items from around the industry to catch up with:
The Paris metro area may be the site of the next big AI campus. OpCore, a JV between iliad and InfraVia Capital partners, has entered into exclusive discussions with the French energy utility EDF on a new project. The idea would be to convert an old coal-fired power plant into a several-hundred-megawatt data center campus. If the stars align properly, the campus could be ready for initial commissioning in 2027.
Nokia has picked up a new three year deal with Telecom Italia. TIM will be using technology from Nokia’s 5G AirScale portfolio across its footprint, expanding and modernizing the company’s coverage and capacity. The deal gives Nokia a significant market share boost in the region.
Omantel has announced the launch of its next generation Managed Optical Fibre Network with the help of Ciena. They have deployed Ciena’s optical gear and supporting technologies to interconnect cable landing stations and carrier neutral data centers, and will be collaborating with Zain to extend their reach across regional markets. Omantel hopes to leverage its position at the mouth of the Persian Gulf into a digital gateway between Asia, Africa, Australia, and Europe.
And ExxonMobil’s move into the data center cooling space got another boost this week. Their single-phase immersion cooling fluids have been approved by Intel, meaning that cooling 4th and 5th generation Xeon processors this way is supported by warranty. The designation is the result of a strategic collaboration that began 18 months or so ago.
