Metro Bytes: MetTel, Brightspeed, Logix, Vero Fiber

A federal contract, some regional waves, some FTTx expansion, and a bit of M&A.

MetTel said this week that it has completed a significant bit of federal work. They have deployed a nationwide network and modernized voice infrastructure for the U.S. General Services Administration. The deal, won under the GSA’s EIS contract, touches 800 locations, many of which had been served via DSL and LTE. Upon more robust network connectivity they added an SD-WAN with a zero trust architecture and a SIP-based voice environment.

Brightspeed has been busy building new fiber, with updates in two states. In Virginia the company completed a network buildout in the Roanoke Valley, connecting 19K locations in Altavista, Collinsville, and Martinsville. They have plans to raise that to 65,500 new locations in other projects around the state. Meanwhile, in Kansas they have completed infrastructure in 13 communities connecting some 29K locations. Their plans in Kansas will bring them to some 49K when fully deployed.

Logix Fiber Networks has picked up a significant wavelength deal down in Texas. They have deployed multiple 400G waves on their 800G backbone for a major wireless carrier, establishing inter-market diversity between major metros across the state. Logix’s footprint connects 80 data centers across Texas as well as 3K on-net buildings.

And there was another bit of consolidation in the FTTx space this week. Vero Fiber has announced a merger agreement with Telephone Electronics Corporation. TEC provides fiber broadband in Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennesee. That will give Vero Fiber a presence in the southeastern US to go with its Western infrastructure in Colorado, California, Montana, Oregon, and Texas.
