Network Bytes: Lumen, SG.GS, Ciena, Gold Data, MDC

Some interesting network news from around the world to catch up with:

Lumen has upgraded its wavelength capabilities across much of the US. They have launched Wavelength RapidRoutes, which offers 100G and 400G waves to enterprise customers with a 20-day delivery SLA. Lumen also says its 400G-enabled reach now extends to 100,000 wavlength route miles of network. Lumen trialed larger pipes of 1.2Tbps and 800G across 3,050km with Ciena back in March.

Singapore-based SG.GS is adding more depth in North America. The global connectivity provider has expanded into Toronto, Seattle, and Ashburn. They have also added subsea capacity on AE-Connect and Dunant in the Atlantic and New Cross Pacific, JUNO, and Jupiter in the Pacific. SG.GS had already had a presence in New York, Chicago. Miami, San Jose, and Los Angeles.

Ciena’s gear is getting a workout in the R&E space in Spain. Comunidad de Madrid has been collaborating with the vendor to build a network foundation on which to launch an End-to-End Quantum Secure Data Transport Project. The project uses Ciena’s 6500 photonic line system, allowing a quantum channel alongside DWDM traffic on the same fiber. That allows them to use existing fiber infrastructure with QKD technology rather than requiring a dedicated fiber.

And Gold Data has opened up a new point of presence on the US/Mexico border. The network operator, which focuses on Central America, the Caribbean, and adjacent regions, has announced the activation of a PoP at MDC Data Centers’ El Paso facility. It’s part of an expanding relationship in which Gold Data has deployed in McAllen and Laredo as well. El Paso and Ciudad Juárez across the border make up a 2.4M metro area.
