Arelion has announced a major upgrade to its network infrastructure in its home turf of Scandinavia. The international network provider that was once the international arm of Teliasonera will be adding more intercity fiber to its diet.
The upgrade is an overbuild, with new high-fiber count cable being pulled through existing ducts in response to demand on key routes. The routes in question form a triangle between Stockholm, Copenhagen, and Oslo.
The existing network on those routes dates to the dot com boom 25 years ago, but at the time Telia built out additional ducts for future demand. It seems that future has arrived, albeit later than folks back then might have expected.
The data center market has been rising quickly in Scandinavia, buoyed by demand from AI just like everywhere else. The new fiber will enable Arelion to connect all the new hyperscale AI infrastructure that is going up.
