Data centers, AI, and interconnection:
Digital Realty has entered the Italian capital of Roman for the first time. They have broken ground on ROM1, starting out with 3MW of IT capacity on a 22-hectare site. The data center giant has been adding to its depth in the Mediterranean region, recently launching HER1 in Crete and has plans for a hub in Barcelona. If all goes well, ROM1 will be completed in 2027.
Crusoe has added to its Icelandic presence with a strategic expansion at atNorth’s ICE02 data center. The move is backed by a $175M credit facility from Victory Park Capital and will leverage hardware from NVIDIA. The facility leverages clean energy as well as direct liquid-to-chip cooling. The company also recently announced a second European location in Norway.
Nokia says it has been selected by INX-ZA for an upgrade to its IX infrastructure down in South Africa. INX-ZA will be deploying Nokia’s 7750 series routers and related technology to support 400GE ports for its peering customers. The upgrade will cover exchange points first in Johannesburg, followed by Cape Town and Durban.
And Ericsson is leading an all-star group of Swedish conglomerates in the launch of Sferical AI. Along with AstraZeneca, Saab, SEB bank, and Wallenberg Investments, the new AI company is targeting Swedish competitiveness in the rapidly growing marketplace. The group will be based in Linköping, and presumably we should be hearing about its infrastructure buildout soon enough.
