The global network operator Arelion is upgrading its network footprint on its home region of Scandinavia. The investments will target hyperscale data center connectivity and demand from the AI marketplace with the help of Ciena’s RLS technology.

Arelion says the upgrades will enable the use of 1.6Tbps wavelengths and 400G coherent pluggable optics. They company has recently completed field trials of both technologies, testing Cisco’s 800G ZR+ coherent optics between Stockholm and Hamburg and Ciena’s WL6e for 1.6Tbps between Ashburn and Virginia Beach.

Arelion’s footprint in the region features multiple terrestrial routes complemented by some 13 subsea cables, touching the major markets in all 4 Nordic countries with a presence in each Baltic nation as well.

The upgrade should be complete by the end of this quarter, with additional investments in the region planned for 2025 and 2026.
