Cinturion Unveils Plans to Build Trans Europe Asia System

December 23rd, 2020 by · Leave a Comment

Cinturion Corp has officially begun work on a new solution to an old problem: connecting western Europe with India and beyond with fiber. The most successful of such solutions have taken a mostly subsea route through Egypt and the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean to India and on to Singapore. A few others have tried piecing together terrestrial fiber across Russia and central Asia. Cinturion is taking a new hybrid approach that has been historically difficult to implement due to political instabilities in the Middle East.

Cinturion’s dual route starts in the Mediterranean with a pair of submarine cables (Med West and Med East) connecting Marseilles, France and Bari, Italy with ports on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean. The southern route then goes through Aqaba and the the Red Sea to Thuwal near Mecca and around the Arabian peninsula to Oman, while the northern route proceeds across the deserts of Saudi Arabia to Ras Al Khair on the Persian Gulf. The routes then take diverse subsea routes over to Mumbai and Gwadar on the western coast of India.

If successful, the result will be the Trans-Europe Asia System, or TEAS. It’s an ambitious project that hopes to create a 300Tbps information superhighway with individual fiber ownership offered to those with the desire. They are partnering with local operators along the route for the necessary landing sites and other infrastructure. Cinturion hopes to take advantage of the latest large core fiberoptic cable technology and other technologies.

DRG Undersea Consulting and BTC Networks will help with the project, which has a tentative RFS date of the third quarter of 2023.  A lot can happen between now and then of course, so we’ll have to see how this project evolves.
