Some new network deployments worth noting across the industry and around the world:

Avelacom has found some new exchanges to hook up to its ultra low latency network. They have launched a multi-cloud solution enabling traders to connect up to cryptocurrency exchanges hosted within the big public clouds (Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, Amazon AWS, and Alibaba Cloud). Avelacom’s global network promises to cut latency by as much as 60ms over vanilla internet connectivity with deployment taking just a few hours.

Last week, Biarri Networks has unveiled plans to connect some 113,000 homes and businesses out in Springfield, Missouri. They are working with The Broadband Group and City Utilities on a $120M fiber buildout aimed at making the Midwestern market into a true ‘Gigabit City’. It’s an ambitious project that will leverage Biarri’s engineering expertise, The Broadband Group’s utility lease model, and excess dark fiber capacity from the utility sector.

Also late last week Ciena announced a key milestone with the R&E network Internet2. Along with Juniper Networks, the three teamed up to deploy a 1,367-mile single 400GE circuit between Chicago and Denver with no signal regeneration or Raman amplification, and put live traffic over it for the SC19 conference. It’s billed as the longest 400G link so far, and leverages Ciena’s latest 6500 gear and WaveLogic AI coherent optics as well as fiber and services from CenturyLink.

And Ireland is putting a pile of cash behind an aggressive broadband rollout plan. They have turned to the investment firm Granahan McCourt to roll out some 146,000km of fiber to connect up 537,000 premises across the country but especially in underserved rural areas. It’s not just talk either, they are putting €2.6b of state aid behind the plan.  It will easily be Granahan McCourt’s biggest such project so far.
