Thursday Roundup: Windstream, maincubes, Hargray, NBN

A few bits of interesting news worth keeping an eye on:

Windstream has unveiled a new UCaaS service based on Avaya technology. The company’s new IP Office service is complementary to their existing UCaaS services but is targeted at a specific opportunity. Older premise-based IP Office systems from Avaya as well as older Nortel phone systems are reaching end-of-life, and Windstream’s new service is being positioned as the smoothest and most economical way for enterprise customers of those legacy services to migrate.

The German data center provider maincubes has a new content-delivery tenant. CDN77 has established a point of presence in the company’s FRA01 facility in Frankfurt. It’s the company’s 35th PoP globally, composed of multiple data center racks now with plans to double that over the yext year. They moved to maincubes from a Frankfurth facility of “one of the world’s largest data center providers”.

Hargray has made another inorganic move down in the southeastern US. They have agreed to acquire Kings Bay Communications, a cable and internet player in Kingsland, Georgia. Hargray intends to quickly integrate the network and billing systems and will invest in Kingsland Cable’s network, adding nextgen products and services.

And according to Capacity, Australia’s NBN is entering the home stretch of the buildout of its access network. Currently they are 85% complete, and expect to finish on schedule in June 2020. The project has certainly evolved a long way since its idealistic pure FTTH origins, incorporating more DSL and alternative options.  So even if they are completing the access buildout, there’s plenty of work left to do to raise bandwidth levels over time I’d say.
