Friday Bytes: CenturyLink, EdgeConneX, GCX

Two bits of international news and one federal contract:

EdgeConneX has opened for business down in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The company’s first edge data center in South America had its ribbon cutting ceremony this week, just under seven months since it was announced back in January. The facility can scale to 10MW of power, supporting service and content providers in need of a local solution.  EdgeConneX’s next logical targets down in Latin America are Bogota and Lima, according to the map on its website.

CenturyLink has picked up a high profile federal deal. They will be providing secure cloud connectivity to the US Census Bureau in support of the upcoming census. The solution includes Managed Trusted Internet Protocol Services at speeds of 40Gbps and up. The deal runs for the next 18 months or so and is part of the GSA’s Networx Universal contract.

And according to Capacity, Global Cloud Xchange has lined up three quotes for the construction of its proposed 20Tbps Eagle submarine cable between Marseille and Singapore. However, they won’t be actually taking the next step until the company’s future is clearer. Its parent Reliance Communications is of course still fighting with the Indian bankruptcy system, a process that most likely will see GCX sold sooner or later.
