Friday Bytes: Sparkle, Telefonica, DC BLOX

A few expansions worth noting before heading off for another summer weekend:

Sparkle has shifted its presence in the African country of Djibouti to the Djibouti Data Center. That facility will now serve as the global internet backbone’s hub for expansion to eastern and southern Africa. Sparkle has been in Djibouti since 2010 via a deal with Djibouti Telecom, and the country has evolved into one of the more important infrastructure nexuses in the region.

Telfonica’s International Wholesale Services division has enhanced its portfolio to provide more global reach. They have extended their internet access for resale capabilities into 30 countries, enabling other carriers to reach deep into Telefonica’s footprint without building out their own infrastructure. That access will be available at two commercial levels, depending on whether SLAs or other guarantees are needed.

And down in the southeastern US, DC BLOX has formally opened a new data center in Birmingham, Alabama. IT’s the company’s fourth facility, initially delivering up to 5MW of power for 18,000 square feet of colo space and 13,000 square feet of office space. At full buildout the data center will support up to 200,000 square feet with 60MW of critical IT load. We had DC Blox CEO Jeff Uphues here for a spotlight just a couple months ago.
