Thursday Roundup: Windstream, German Spectrum, and the FCC

A few items worth noting:

Windstream Wholesale has added another node on its southwestern network infrastructure. They have established a presence in MDC El Paso, situated both on a key east-west route and at an important border crossing location with access to the markets of Mexico. Windstream Wholesale was already in MDC’s McAllen and Laredo facilities, so this sort of completes their Rio Grande set.

German providers have spent a bit of cash on 5G spectrum, and by a bit I mean $6.55B. Vodafone Germany spent €1.88B, DT spent €2.2B, Telefonica Germany paid €1.4B, and 1&1 Drillish spent €1.1B give or take. Each needs the extra spectrum to meet 5G buildout needs, and the general consensus seems to be that the price tag was rather high.

And the FCC has authorized $1.668M in funding for rural broadband projects. The funding will support expansion to some 60,850 homes and businesses across 22 state via a couple dozen different regional providers, including eight of Verizon’s subsidiaries – they were pretty active in this one.
