Wednesday Roundup: Telia, DE-CIX, Verizon

May 15th, 2019 by · Leave a Comment

I’m on the road today, but here’s some quick catch-up on some news from yesterday:

Telia Carrier has added yet another node to its network. The international backbone operator has announced a new Cloud Connect PoP at SUPERNAP Italia, just outside of Milan, Italy. The node will offer customers in northern Italy access to Amazon AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, IBM Cloud, and the other usual suspects.

DE-CIX has expanded again in its home turf of Frankfurt. They are working with the data center operator maincubes, leveraging the data center’s infrastructure to add another node to the company’s IX fabric, whose nodes stand at 32. DE-CIX’s IX in Frankfurt has been pushing 7Tbps.

And Verizon has been busy adding to its IoT capabilities. Yesterday they launched their Narrowband IoT network nationwide, covering 92% of the US population. Verizon’s NB-IoT can handle IP and non-IP traffic, the latter being useful for simpler and therefore less expensive devices and applications. It targets IoT applications needing less than 100kbps of traffic, and leverages 180kHz of dedicated spectrum.
