FirstLight Invests in Maine

May 2nd, 2019 by · 3 Comments

Some new fiber infrastructure is being put in place in upper New England this season. FirstLight said yesterday that it is in the process of expanding its fiber network in one of the US’s most ignored infrastructure markets: Maine.

FirstLight is boosting its fiber footprint by 10% in the state. They are building out fiber in Biddeford-Saco’s downtown business district, bringing links of up to 100Gbps to businesses there. Biddeford and Saco lie on either side of the Saco River as it empties into the Atlantic 20 miles south of Portland.

And Portland itself is also getting some new fiber downtown. The expansion will reach down Middle, Fore, Commercial, and Congress streets, allowing FirstLight to offer fiber-based connectivity to a wider range of businesses.

FirstLight first moved into Maine 5 years ago, and then followed up in force when it merged with Oxford Networks a little over 2 years ago.

The Firstlight network map as shown is somewhat misleading. Nearly all of the network along the coast on the Route 1 corridor is leased fiber from Maine Fiber Company, and much interior Maine network is leased from Consolidated Communications or Maine Fiber.

we really going to make carriers show only their non-IRU’d fiber miles? look forward to those maps

This is a perception issue. Transport via IRU is fine but the context of the map gives the impression of service area which is not a true picture.
