Friday Roundup: Digital Realty, Fatbeam, Infinera, Vapor IO

Four news items to finish the week with:

Digital Realty is making a move into a new market: Santiago Chile.  Through Ascenty, their joint venture with Brookfield Infrastructure, they have won a multi-megawatt cloud deployment.  Construction is already underway, with a goal of 6.3MW of total IT capacity and a target date of sometime in 2020.  Given that Google’s Curie cable just landed in nearby Valparaiso, it seems that Chile is hot right now.  Yes, that pun was intended.

Fatbeam had a big E-Rate season in the first quarter of 2019.  The western US fiber builder and operator says it has won contracts totaling $13.3M across multiple E-Rate opportunities in the Pacific Northwest.  Among those mentioned are the Tigard-Tualatin School District in Oregon, the Auburn and North Kitsap School districts in Washington, and the Spokane County Library.   Once that fiber is in place, Fatbeam will leverage it to address other opportunities in those communities.

Infinera has won a new convert for its Groove Network Disaggregation Platform.  Cyxtera is deploying the gear in support of its data center interconnection services.  Cyxtera of course was born when CenturyLink spun off its data centers and colo business, and operates some 50 facilities worldwide.  Infinera’s gear gives them a compact, plug-and-play architecture with a pathway to 600G transmission.

And Vapor IO is teaming up with Crown Castle for better cloud interconnection capabilities.  The two have jointly developed a service that combines Vapor IO’s Kinetic Edge and Crown Castle’s Cloud Connect to interconnect with Amazon AWS.  Vapor IO says it is deploying its edge platform more widely now, reaching into 20 markets nationally by 2020 with an eventual target of 80.  Smooth AWS interconnection is one key piece of that puzzle of course.
