CenturyLink to Hook Up NASA

April 9th, 2019 by · 2 Comments

CenturyLink picked up a high profile federal contract yesterday. The network operator will be providing connectivity to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

The deal will see CenturyLink provide NASA with core backbone links of as high as 100Gbps over the next 9.5 years. It’s part of the new $50B, 15-year Enterprise Infrastructure Solutions (EIS) contract vechicle from the GSA. EIS is the inheritor of Networx, and both CenturyLink and Level won spots on it the summer before last. CenturyLink became the first provider granted authority to operate under the contract just last month.

On another front, late last week CenturyLink unveiled a new CDN Mesh Delivery product. They are leveraging peer-to-peer technology from Streamroot to supplement their more traditional CDN infrastructure and better manage peek traffic loads. There was a time when people thought P2P would turn the CDN world on its ear, so it’s interesting to see more mature versions integrated under the same tent.

  • CenturyLink will be remembered for this throughout the history of Mankind. That will make happen so many space inventions. To me it is a win win deal.

Yeah totally. Every time I think NASA, its not the moon or space shuttle or space station or hubble telescope: I think of a slow-growth by acquisition, mediocre telecom who can’t deliver things on time and has no differentiation whatsoever from its major competitors. To infinity – and beyond!
