Telia, 123Net Team Up in Michigan

February 12th, 2019 by · Leave a Comment

In Detroit this morning, Telia Carrier and 123Net unveiled a new partnership that expands the reach of both companies’ infrastructure. Telia has added a new PoP in 123Net’s Tier 3 data center, and 123Net is using the global backbone to scalably enhance its connectivity.

123Net has been expanding its metro and regional depth throughout Michigan, and now operates some 4,000 route miles of fiber across the state as well as a substantial fixed wireless footprint. Within their colocation footprint they also host the DET-IX exchange. They are pushing hard to put the infrastructure in place that can deal with the bandwidth demands of new technologies like self-driving cars, which the state of Michigan is actively supporting.

Meanwhile, Telia Carrier has been steadily adding more off ramps to its global backbone throughout North America, and this is the company’s third PoP in Detroit. But by working directly with regional providers like 123Net, they add partners with significant reach and local knowledge beyond those PoPs.  Telia’s North American network is based on a dark fiber footprint it has been expanding, complemented by leased capacity mostly in the northern tier of the country. Detroit is a market for which I suspect they would like to add some dark fiber to as well.
