There was an interesting fiber M&A down in the southeast this morning. Hargray Communications has made its second deal of the month with an agreement to acquire Dark Fiber Systems in Jacksonville.
DFS operates a 150 route mile footprint within the Jacksonville, Florida metro area. The deal gives Hargray depth at the southern end of its regional network, following quickly its purchase a bit further west of USA Communications’ assets in Alabama. Hargray’s footprint now spans more than 4000 route miles thus far in South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, and Florida.
Hargray plans to expand that footprint as well as add lit services to the Jacksonville market. Hargray now has some integration to do, but clearly they are in expansion mode and could be thinking of other deals in the southeast going forward.
