News Press & Gazette Buys Nebraska Data Centers

A pretty big chunk of Midwestern data center space quietly changed hands this week. The buyer is News Press & Gazette Company, and the target was Omaha’s Nebraska Data Centers.

The facilities in question are at 1623 Farnam in downtown Omaha with 55,000 square feet and a facility in nearby Lincoln with another 155,000 square feet of potential space, making over 200,000 square feet overall. With 40 network operators in the facility already and the Omaha-IX exchange interconnecting them, the new owners see an opportunity to invest further to build the assets into the region’s major carrier hotel. Some $30M may be put into the project over the next 5 years.

NPG is a media company with roots in the newspaper and holdings in television and manufacturing. Through its BERKS subsidiary the company has been diversifying through investments into technology and infrastructure. Buying a data center is a rather interesting idea, given that I can think of several old newspaper plants that themselves were redeveloped into data centers over the years.

Financial terms were not disclosed.
