Network Roundup: Windstream, FirstLight, UPN, ZenFi

October 31st, 2018 by · 1 Comment

I’m on the road this week, but the rest of the world rolls on.  Here are a few US network bits of news worth noting:

Windstream Wholesale has revealed plans to add an express route between the markets of Dallas and Atlanta. The overbuild will streamline their connectivity between the two major hubs while increasing the potential capacity on the route to 48Tbps. It’s part of a broader upgrade of Windstream’s transport network that has been going on for a while and has more yet to do. The Dallas-Atlanta route likely leverages the assets of EarthLink and Deltacom before that.

FirstLight is teaming up with Megaport to bring a broader universe of interconnection to its clients in northern New England and upstate New York. Enterprises and other entities in the region will be able to leverage FirstLight’s metro and regional reach while reaching out to the cloud via Megaport’s SDN platform.

Unite Private Networks has been working on automation for its carrier customers. They unveiled a self-service portal aimed at carriers and similar providers yesterday. The initial roll-out quotes all on-net locations, while phase 2 will add near net opportunities as well.

And ZenFi’s plan for further expanding throughout the NY/NJ metro area fiber market will be using Sitetracker. The project and asset management software will help ZenFi deploy small cells across what has expanded to a 700-mile regional and metro network following the closing of the Cross River Fiber deal. The company has some 6,000 outdoor wireless locations under contract, so there’s going to be plenty to track.

Windstream already has 100G on the Dallas – Atlanta glass they have. I wonder if they’re getting some IRUs from Zayo or if they’re doing something else.
