Liquid Telecom, Telecom Egypt to Hook Up Africa’s North and South

July 17th, 2018 by · Leave a Comment

The African fiber market may finally have a terrestrial link from North to South. Liquid Telecom and Telecom Egypt have signed an MOU to link up their fiber networks and enable Liquid Telecom to hook up Cairo to Cape Town without going under the waves.

A new cross border interconnection will be built between Liquid Telecom’s northern outpost in Sudan and Telecom Egypt’s network. The arrangement is the last piece of the One Africa puzzle that Liquid has been putting together, making their pan-African dream reality at least on the continent’s eastern coast.

Liquid has been pushing steadily northward for 10 years, first moving in force into East Africa and most recently stretching through Sudan to the Egyptian border. They’ve done some of that via their own builds, some via M&A, and some via partnerships like in this case. I didn’t actually think they’d make it, but there’s plenty of work left to do to really be pan-African of course!
