euNetworks to Help DE-CIX Expand Reach

July 11th, 2018 by · Leave a Comment

Frankfurt-based internet exchange provider DE-CIX has unveiled a new Project Reach initiative to extend its effective reach into more data centers across Europe. To get that done they’ll be tapping the network of pan-European bandwidth infrastructure provider euNetworks.

DE-CIX wants to expand the number of data centers that have easy access to the company’s IX nodes, and euNetworks has been specializing in hooking up data centers to its network for some time now. They have over 350 on-net data centers sprinkled around the continent now. euNetworks will be managing and maintaining the hardware to supply Ethernet, layer 2 VPLS/MPLS, VLANs, 10G Ethernet NNI, and plug & play via an ordering portal to tenants of those facilities who want to access DE-CIX exchanges.

DE-CIX’s flagship exchange in Frankfurt sees over 6.4Tbps of traffic these days, but they also have nodes in four other key German cities as well as three in the southern European markets of Marseille, Madrid, and Palermo. I don’t think euNetworks goes to Palermo yet, but they do get to Marseille and have a presence in Madrid as well.

euNetworks has been relatively quiet since StonePeak acquired a majority stake in the company over the winter.  That gave the company a substantial war chest to dip into for expansion projects, whether organic or inorganic, and I’m still curious how that will manifest going forward.
