Thursday Roundup: Netrality, Frontier, SEACOM, CenturyLink

June 7th, 2018 by · Leave a Comment

Here’s a quick rundown on some other news from this week:

Netrality has a new fiber option at 1301 Fannin in Houston. FiberLight has established a PoP in the facility’s Meet Me Room, connecting the company’s extensive Texas footprint directly into Netrality’s ecosystem. Netrality acquired 1301 Fannin back in 2015 and built out that meet-me-room soon thereafter.

Another service provider is turning to Nokia’s XGS-PON technology. Frontier plans to deploy the gear on its network, starting with Dallas/Fort Worth and then the rest of Texas and on to Florida and California. They will use the upgrade to move into 10Gbps symmetric broadband seeds to satisfy market demand. Nokia says it has some 14 service providers around the world lined up for its XGS/PON solution.

SEACOM has completed a significant upgrade of its subsea cable system between Europe and East/South Africa, according to Capacity. They have deployed Ciena’s 6500 packet-optical platform and software to add another 500G of capacity, complementing the 500G they added a year and a half ago.

And CenturyLink has announced two interesting connectivity wins this week. The Quilt has again selected them as an authorized service provider, enabling them to sell into the coalition’s 900+ educational institutions and 40+ networks. That’s no big surprise, they (or those they have acquired) have been on that list since 2002. Meanwhile, CenturyLink has hooked up a high profile complex in La Crosse Wisconsin called the Hub on 6th. It’s a mixed-use development with 113 housing units as well as commercial space, and CenturyLink will be offering 1Gbps to both residential ane business customers.
