EdgeConneX, Renovo Team Up for Vehicle Automation

June 12th, 2018 by · Leave a Comment

EdgeConneX and Renovo have announced a new collaboration to advance ‘Vehicle-Edge-Cloud Infrastructure and Data Orchestration’. They hope to pair EdgeConneX’s data centers out at the network edge with Renovo’s cloud-based software to better support deployment of automated vehicle fleets at scale.

Of all the future technologies being bandied about out there in today’s media world, the future shift toward self-driving cars is perhaps the easiest to envision. That being said, there are a lot of problems yet to conquer before that future is truly at hand.

One of the biggest of those problems is bandwidth itself. If a single such vehicle might generate a few terabytes of raw data per hour, how many bytes do first thousands and eventually tens of millions of them generate per year and how many of those bytes have to go over the wireless networks of tomorrow with low latency and no packet loss? The answer is a simple ‘too many’ at this point, 5G or no 5G.

But it’s early yet of course. The answer will lie in fusing new software with the right blend of infrastructure, making better decisions in better places about what data to send where. EdgeConneX and Renovo hope to show their progress in tackling such issues later this year on a project in San Jose, California.
