Another Big Backhaul Deal for Zayo

April 2nd, 2018 by · 2 Comments

Zayo’s biggest find for Easter was just what it is always looking for: a giant tower backhaul deal. A ‘major wireless carrier’ has tapped the Boulder-based fiber builder and operator for fiber-to-the tower across much of the company’s footprint.

The deal will see Zayo bring ‘thousands of macro towers’ on-net for the wireless carrier spanning 30 markets across 21 states, and is Zayo’s largest single FTT contract to date. Of course, there are only so many wireless carriers and all are already leveraging Zayo backhaul in some form, so it’s no suprise this is an expansion of an existing relationship. In this case, the new deal follows this September 2016 deal for 1800 towers in 26 markets.

While the deal will see Zayo build out plenty of new fiber (‘hundreds of route miles’ according to the PR), they will be leveraging lots more fiber that is already in place across these markets. With the big wireless carriers preparing their backhaul networks for the inevitable-but-still-a-ways-off 5G data onslaught, Zayo is surely expecting further such payoffs from its early investments in this segment of the market years ago.
