Wednesday Bytes: FiberLight, PacketFabric, Megaport, ROOT, Juniper

A leadership change, two bits of cloud connectivity news, some AI, and an expanded vendor/network/software relationship.

FiberLight has a new CEO this week, as they have elevated Don MacNeil to the role effective immediately. Don had been the company’s COO since September, and prior to that had been CTO at EdgeConneX and COO at XO. Don replaces Jim Lynch, who has led FiberLight over the past three years. FiberLight has remained aloof from consolidation in the metro space, one of the few supra-regional fiber builders and operators to stick to the organic path.

PacketFabric announced yesterday that it has achieved AWS networking competency status, giving them chops as an AWS Partner Network with demonstrated technical proficiency and success in delivering on the AWS platform. PacketFabric is still in its first year, but has made many inroads into the space in a very short time. They provide AWS Direct Connect to Amazon’s US-East-1, US-East 2, US-West-1, and US-West-2 regions.

Also in the cloud connectivity space, Megaport says it is now providing direct connectivity to the IBM Cloud. Enterprises can now reach IBM’s platform via a secure, low latency link from any of the company’s 179 locations worldwide. Megaport’s global expansion from its Aussie roots over the last couple of years has certainly been rapid, and they appear to be have some success consolidating that position.

Root Data Center is cutting a new path, putting artificial intelligence to work. The idea is to reduce data center downtime, leveraging AI technology from Litbit within its DCIM strategy. By improving its ability to anticipate and manage potential failures at its Montreal facility, they hope to pass on the resulting reliability to customers.

And Juniper Networks is deepening its relationship with Telefonica. They are helping the Spanish-based global network operator to give its ‘Fusión Network’ self-driving capabilities. Telefonica will be deploying Juniper’s automation, analysis, and AI/Machine Learning software, focusing initially on self-diagnosis/correction, network resource management, and the dynamic creation of SLA-sensitive service instances.
