Nokia Introduces Petabit-class Router

June 15th, 2017 by · 2 Comments

Yesterday Nokia took the wraps off of its next generation routing platform and moved the conversation from the terabit to the petabit.

Of course the demands of traffic growth never sleep, and with the ongoing rise of video plus the arrival of IoT it’s quite clear we’ll be needing it. Nokia’s Bell Labs division is forecasting 25% compound annual growth rates, with peak data rates jumping by 40% annually.  Those numbers aren’t unfamiliar of course, it’s just the inexorable exponential growth we are always striving to keep up with.

The new platform is powered by Nokia’s new FP4 silicon chipset, which they say upgrades performance by a factor of 6 above those currently in service and features a 2.4Tbps network processor. The 7750 Service Router can support 144Tbps per shelf, and the 7950 Extensible Routing System scales up to 576Tbps.

Now, that’s not actually a petabit per second of course.  But I guess it rounds up to one and the underlying technology will likely scale that far when the market is ready to buy it.
