Friday Bytes: UPN, CoreSite, Equinix, Level 3, CenturyLink

June 2nd, 2017 by · 7 Comments

Here’s a bit more news from this week that’s worth a look:

Unite Private Networks picked up another regional enterprise customer this week.  Garner Industries has tapped them for dedicated internet access in the Lincoln, Nebraska metro area where the company is a custom manufacturer of plastic-molded and CNC-machined parts.  UPN has brought their company headquarters on-net, sharing construction costs as part of a multi-year agreement.

Two of the big data center names added some cloud connectivity this week.  CoreSite has made Microsoft Azure ExpressRoute available at its Boston data center.  It’s the fourth such facility they have done so at, the others being in New York, Los Angeles, and Denver.  And Equinix has added AWS Direct Connect services down in Sao Paulo, Brazil.  They have four facilities there spanning 145,000 square feet of colo space.

And we have some news from the Level 3/CenturyLink acquisition front.  Level 3 CEO Jeff Storey will be joining the combined company as president and COO.  In addition, Storey has been designated as the successor to the CEO role with the expectation that current CenturyLink CEO Glen F. Post III will transition to executive chairman on January 1, 2019.

With this much advance notice of Storey taking over, we can now predict the great heights and visionary leadership in the industry that Centurylink intends to take.

Hopefully you didn’t have a liquid in your mouth when you read that, or it will be all over the screen by now.

Of the two choices of leadership teams and company structures, I would take Level 3 and Storey in a heartbeat over what CTL has in place right now. Level 3 consistently delivers for their enterprise customers; CTL – not so much.

I would have to agree with you there, though it is not saying much. Would you say Lloyd or Harry will make a better leader?

I think they should have looked OUTSIDE the industry for a new CEO. Inside Bell-heads are not able to think big in an all-IP world.
