CenturyLink’s cloud ambitions remain, and this morning they did another small M&A aimed at bringing more technology and talent in-house. CenturyLink has acquired ElasticBox, whose main claim to fame is a multi-cloud application management service.
ElasticBox has offices in San Francisco and over in Madrid, and focuses on enabling enterprises to orchestrate their various applications across more than a dozen clouds. CenturyLink’s cloud recently became one of those in updates that also added more feature support for Google’s cloud and OpenStack. Also in the mix is support for Docker and Amazon ECS containers.
Over the past couple of years, CenturyLink has been linked to rumors of an interest in selling off its cloud and/or data center assets, as have its larger ILEC brethren. Those rumors haven’t been active lately, but the summer is just getting started and I doubt the angst of the large telcos about their cloud investments has dissipated.
But CenturyLink’s acquisition of ElasticBox is further evidence that the future of enterprise cloud activity is likely to be a complicated one. Amazon is still huge, but spanning multiple cloud infrastructures is becoming entry stakes for service providers.
