San Antonio, Austin Are Next on Zayo’s FTT Menu

Zayo said this morning that it has significant buildout plans for the Texas cities of San Antonio and Austin.  The infrastructure builder and operator will be adding more than 700 route miles in the two markets as it moves to hook up some 300 wireless towers.

That’s a lot of route miles for two markets where Zayo’s metro footprint is still pretty thin, deriving mostly from the AboveNet purchase a few years back now, as you can see from Zayo’s current route maps:

Clearly Zayo is leveraging an FTT anchor customer as a way to expand its reach in both cities so as to reach more enterprises and other potential customers as well, as they have done in so many markets now.

Zayo is still hard at work a little ways to the north in the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area, where it is adding more than 2,000 new metro fiber miles to accomplish a very similar goal. We saw them tack on a dark fiber deal with the city of Fort Worth to that project two months ago.

Along with the purchase of Clearview’s two data centers, it is pretty clear that Texas is on the front lines of Zayo’s ever-expanding fiber offensive.  And for good reason too — along with Florida, it had been one of the few remaining weak spots in the company’s national metro depth, despite the size of the potential market.
